This small SUV’s performance belies its size. KONA SE and SEL trims have a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. As a result, this powertrain makes 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque.
N Line and Limited trims use a 1.6-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine with gasoline direct-injection technology, paired to the same eight-speed automatic as the SE and SEL. This powertrain produces an impressive 190 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. We expect Hyundai to make this engine an option on the SE and SEL trims. The turbo-four tops out at 31 mpg, and the 2.0-liter engine rates at 35 mpg.
Every Hyundai KONA comes standard with a capable front-wheel-drive platform. However, you can add Hyundai’s HTRAC AWD for $1,500 and get more confident driving dynamics when the surfaces get soft or slick.
