How to Check Car Oil

Checking oil level on dipstick

Motor oil is the lifeblood of your vehicle — so it’s important for every driver to know how to check car oil, how much car oil to add, and the type of car oil your make and model requires. Motor oil has the important job of keeping engine temperatures down and preventing damage to engine components. At Allen Turner Hyundai, we want to help you keep moving in Mobile, AL! Read the guide below to learn how to check your car oil and follow your Hyundai maintenance schedule to a T.

Learn How to Check the Oil Level in Your Car

How to check the oil level will differ depending on your make and model. Keep in mind that many newer vehicles use an electronic monitor, and not the traditional dipstick you may be accustomed to. For electronic monitoring systems, check your owner’s manual for best practices and recommendations on how to check car oil, as well as the type of oil your car needs. For older vehicles, follow these steps to check the oil level in your car manually:

  1. Park the car on ground level and wait until the engine is cold before checking the oil level.
  2. Open the vehicle’s hood and find the dipstick.
  3. Pull the dipstick out of the engine and wipe oil and debris from the end.
  4. Re-insert the dipstick into its tube, pull it out, and look at both sides to see where the level sits.

Your dipstick will show you if you need more oil or not. If the oil reaches between the two marks or within the cross-hatched area on the dipstick, your oil level is good. If your oil level sits elsewhere on the dipstick, you need to add more oil.

Why Check Your Car’s Oil Level?

Many Ft Walton drivers overlook the importance of adding motor oil when levels are low. However, it is vital to change the oil in your car at least twice a year. The timeframe may be longer or shorter depending on the model, the vehicle’s age, and how often it is driven. Using our directions above, you can quickly check your oil once a month from home. This way, you can rest easy that there are no issues with your oil and no damage is occurring under the hood.
