2024 Hyundai SANTA FE vs. 2024 Land Rover Defender

The 2024 Hyundai SANTA FE has undergone a major refresh that makes it vastly different from the outgoing model. Besides an all-new exterior and interior, the Hyundai SUV also receives a longer wheelbase to accommodate a third row of seats. The 2024 Land Rover Defender gets only a few updates, including a new trim level and an exterior styling package. Let’s find out how the latest Hyundai SANTA FE matches up against the Land Rover Defender.

Trim Levels and Prices

For 2024, the Hyundai SANTA FE comes in five variants: the entry-level SE, SEL, XRT, Limited, and the range-topping Calligraphy. If you’re interested in getting a new Hyundai, the starting MSRP for this model ranges from $33,950 for the SE to $46,500 for the Calligraphy, making it relatively affordable compared to its competitors. The SANTA FE also has a hybrid version.

The 2024 Land Rover Defender offers a six-trim lineup that includes the S, X-Dynamic SE, X, the new Outbound, V8, and the top-of-the-line V8 Carpathian Edition. Most of these trims are available in three body styles: the two-door 90, the four-door 110, and the long-wheelbase 130. Since it’s a luxury vehicle, the Defender is much more expensive than the SANTA FE. The S starts at $56,400, while the V8 Carpathian Edition costs $115,300 or more.

All gas-powered 2024 Hyundai SANTA FE models are equipped with a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that generates 277 horsepower. This engine works with an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and front- or all-wheel drive. If you opt for a hybrid model, you’ll get a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that combines with an electric motor to deliver a total output of 232 horsepower. The hybrid powertrain is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive.

When it comes to power, the 2024 Land Rover Defender is the clear winner. This SUV offers four potent engine options, ranging from the base 296-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder to a 518-horsepower 5.0-liter supercharged V-8. Every Defender model is fitted with an eight-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive.

While they deliver plenty of horsepower, the Defender’s engines get poor gas mileage. The standard four-cylinder engine is rated at 18/21 mpg (city/highway), while the V-8 earns as little as 14/19 mpg. Although the EPA hasn’t tested the new SANTA FE, the Hyundai’s base engine returned 22/28 mpg in the 2023 model. The hybrid powertrain is a lot thriftier, achieving an impressive 33/30 mpg.

In terms of exterior styling, the new Hyundai SANTA FE looks bolder and more imposing than before. It has swapped its predecessor’s rounded silhouette for a more squared-off shape. Its pixelated light configuration and trapezoidal wheel arches give it a futuristic appeal, while subtle curves on the front and rear add a touch of elegance. The Land Rover Defender also features a boxy design, but it looks more rugged and muscular than its Hyundai rival.

The Defender’s exterior color palette consists mostly of neutral and earthy hues that suit its outdoorsy personality. In contrast, the SANTA FE has several color options that can help you stand out on the road, such as Terracotta Orange and Rockwood Green Pearl.

The interior of the 2024 Hyundai SANTA FE matches its boxy exterior, featuring clean lines and rectangular styling elements. It punches above its price point in terms of build quality and materials. The cabin of the 2024 Land Rover Defender is also solidly built and feels premium. However, there are some noticeable hard plastics that you won’t expect to find in an upmarket SUV.

The SANTA FE can now accommodate up to seven people with its new third row, while the Defender can seat up to eight in the 130 body style. Both models boast comfortable, supportive, and spacious seats, but the Hyundai provides more legroom in the front and second rows. As for cargo space, Hyundai SUVs rarely disappoint. The SANTA FE offers 40.5 cubic feet with the rearmost row folded, while the Land Rover 130 gives you only 35.8 cubic feet.

Infotainment Features

The 2024 Hyundai SANTA FE is equipped with a large 12.3-inch touch-screen infotainment display, and the Limited trim boasts a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. All trims have wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. The 2024 Land Rover Defender also offers a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, but it has a smaller 11.4-inch infotainment touch screen. That said, it does come standard with wireless device charging and a 10-speaker Meridian premium audio system.

Safety Features

Few SUVs have a longer list of standard driver-assistance technologies than the Hyundai SANTA FE and Land Rover Defender. Every model of these two SUVs is equipped with forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, lane departure warning, blind-spot detection, and rear cross-traffic alerts. However, the SANTA FE has a few state-of-the-art driver aids that aren’t available on the Defender, such as smart cruise control and semi-autonomous highway driving assist.
