Everything we know about the IONIQ 6
The newest addition to the electric vehicle (EV) market is on the horizon. Hyundai’s new IONIQ 6 is soon to be released, and based on what we know so far, it’s an impressive addition to the IONIQ line. Meant to compete with the Tesla Model 3, the all-electric IONIQ 6 is aerodynamic, efficient, and high-tech. Its exterior has received a major overhaul since its predecessor, shifting from a crossover SUV design to a smooth, streamlined sedan. Plus, the IONIQ 6’s battery has an impressive charge range and charging speed.
Even though the Hyundai IONIQ 6 isn’t yet on the market, and even though some elements of the IONIQ 6 remain a mystery, let’s dive deep into what we do know so far about the new Hyundai EV.
What’s New in the Hyundai IONIQ 6
Following in the footsteps of the wildly popular IONIQ 5, the sixth addition to Hyundai’s line of all-electric sedans is just around the corner. There have been a significant number of changes since the previous model, most notably in its external appearance. The exterior design has become much more aerodynamic and streamlined, while the interior remains roomy and comfortable with its eco-friendly materials. Additionally, the battery has received an increased charge range. Overall, the IONIQ 6 is improved in both performance and appearance, inside and out.
Exterior and Interior Design
While it certainly looks stunning, the main purpose of the IONIQ 6’s new streamlined look is to improve its aerodynamics. This model’s new drag coefficient is 0.21, having a positive effect on the car’s efficiency and range. Some of the specific additions include an active air flap in the lower front bumper, as well as wheel air curtains and an integrated rear spoiler.
Inside the IONIQ 6, there’s plenty of space due to the increased size of the wheelbase. Depending on the chosen trim, there are a variety of material options, including eco-process leather, recycled PET fabric for the seats, bio TPO skin for the dashboard, and even recycled fishing nets for the carpets. Hyundai’s focus on eco-friendly materials doesn’t cost you in comfort, however — the interior is designed with the sensory experience in mind, featuring customizable dual color ambient lighting, optional Relaxation Comfort Seats, and an interior soundscape designed with “spaceship-like” sounds that morph based on your drive.
Advanced Technology Features
The IONIQ 6 is just as high-tech as it appears. On the dashboard, there’s a 12-inch infotainment system, as well as a 12-inch digital cluster in front of the steering wheel, creating a modular touch-screen display. There are also plenty of available ports, with one type-A and four type-C USB ports throughout the interior.
The customizable 64-color lighting with six available themes allows you to change the interior lighting based on your mood. Plus, there’s a neat Speed Sync Lighting mode, which increases or decreases the brightness in the front depending on the speed you’re driving. For even further customization, there’s an EV Performance Tune-Up System, allowing you to configure the car’s settings depending on where or how you’re driving.
Power and Performance
Available in either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive, the IONIQ 6 has a 77.4 kWh battery paired with a twin electric motor system. The all-wheel-drive model in particular boasts 320 horsepower and 446 lb-ft of torque, meaning that the IONIQ 6 will be able to go zero to 60 mph in just 5 seconds. Plus, for the first two years, IONIQ 6 drivers will receive free charging for up to 30 minutes at Electrify America rapid charging stations throughout Florida and beyond.
What Is the Range for the IONIQ 6?
The battery on the rear-wheel-drive model of the IONIQ 6 offers an impressive charge range of up to 340 miles, just behind the range of the Tesla Model 3 Long Range, while the all-wheel-drive version has a range of up to 310 miles. With Hyundai’s E-GMP platform, the battery can charge from 10% to 80% in as little as 18 minutes with both 400- and 800-volt charging supported, making it one of the fastest-charging EVs on the market.
Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
The IONIQ 6 will feature Hyundai’s Highway Driving Assist 2 system, which offers semi-automated driving, including acceleration, braking, steering, and even lane changes. Additional safety features include forward automatic emergency braking and pedestrian, cycling, and intersection collision sensors, as well as automatic high-beam headlights, smart cruise control, evasive steering assist, blind-spot monitoring, speed-limit assist, rear automatic braking, and safe-exit assist.
The digital instrument display will feature a view of the IONIQ 6’s blind spots when the turn signal is activated, as well as a bird’s-eye view to assist with parking, ensuring total awareness of the car’s surroundings. Plus, there’s the option to add Remote Smart Parking Assist, which allows you to park or unpark your car remotely.
When Will the Hyundai IONIQ 6 Be Available?
Hyundai has announced that the IONIQ 6 will go on sale in Spring 2023 in North American markets, subject to supply availability. Elsewhere, buyers will be able to get the IONIQ 6 even sooner, appearing in Korean and European markets as early as this year. While pricing information hasn’t yet been released, it’s estimated to be significantly higher than the cost of the IONIQ 5, which has a starting MSRP of $41,450.
