If you’re interested in an all-electric vehicle, the Hyundai IONIQ and Tesla are sure to make it on your list of potential purchases. The 2023 Hyundai IONIQ 6 vs. Tesla 3
The new Hyundai IONIQ 6 offers features and amenities that are comparable to the Tesla 3. Available at a similar price point, the IONIQ 6 is a must-see vehicle if you’re interested in venturing into the world of all-electric cars. Though the Tesla name is often associated with sleek tech features and innovative elements, the IONIQ 6 neatly beats the Tesla 3 for functionality and reliability in its technology. The IONIQ also offers a more eye-catching design, a more spacious backseat, and an impressively quiet ride.
Price
These vehicles are extremely comparable in price. The Hyundai IONIQ 6 starts at an MSRP of $41,600 for the base model, and the top trim level starts at $52,600. In comparison, the Tesla 3 starts at $40,240 for the base model and $53,240 for the premium trim.
Trim Levels
The Hyundai IONIQ is available in four different trims. The SE Standard Range is the most affordable option, offering a 240-mile electric range. The SE is also billed as the base trim, but it packs more power with dual motors that offer a 362-mile rear-wheel-drive (RWD) range and 316-mile all-wheel-drive (AWD) range.
The SEL offers some extra features such as highway driving assist and 20-inch alloy wheels compared with the 18-inch wheels on the base-level trims. In the SEL, you’ll get a 305-mile all-electric range with RWD and 270-mile range with AWD. The Hyundai IONIQ Limited provides premium amenities, including a blind-spot view monitor and premium remote start parking assist with the same range as the SEL.
The Tesla 3 comes in three different trims. The Base level trim provides a range of 267 to 272 miles, and the Long Range gets you further with an electric range of 334 to 358 miles. This trim also features a premium audio system and ambient interior lighting for a more luxurious driving experience. The Performance trim provides 315 miles of electric range. This optimized vehicle also features performance brakes, 20-inch Überturbine wheels, and aluminum alloy pedals.
Performance
The base-level RWD IONIQ 6 is powered by a 53 kWh battery pack that delivers 149 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The Long Range models up the ante with a 77.4 kWh battery. In the RWD model, this battery offers 225 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The AWD Long Range IONIQ offers 320 horsepower and 446 lb-ft of torque, as well as a smooth driving experience thanks to a taut suspension.
In comparison, the base-level RWD Tesla 3 has a 54 kWh battery that delivers 283 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. The Long Range AWD and Performance AWD options have 82 kWh batteries with a minimum of 450 horsepower and 471 lb-ft of torque. Though the Tesla offers impressive acceleration and sharp braking, its overall driving experience is less sophisticated and much louder than the IONIQ.
Safety Features
The IONIQ 6 comes standard with automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, automatic headlights with adaptive high beams, lane departure warning with lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control complete with a lane-centering feature. The Limited trim offers additional perks such as rain-sensing wipers and remote parking assist.
The autopilot feature in the Tesla 3 is notoriously buggy, making it unreliable. Standard safety features that you can rely on include automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and lane departure warning.
Exterior Design
The IONIQ 6 has a striking exterior design with smooth curving lines and a distinctly aerodynamic shape, which give it an impressive 0.22 drag coefficient. The gap between the fender and wheel well is notably small, further contributing to the vehicle’s head-turning look.
Though the Tesla 3 boasts the same drag coefficient, it has a more traditional design that’s similar to the typical hatchback. The Tesla is smaller than the IONIQ 6 all around, measuring 6.7 inches shorter in length, 1.2 inches slimmer, and 2.1 inches shorter in height.
Interior Design
The Hyundai IONIQ 6 seats five in its spacious interior, and your rear passengers will enjoy an impressive 39.2 inches of legroom. Ample sound-deadening materials also provide a delightfully quiet ride. You’ll find 11.6 cubic feet of cargo space in the trunk and an additional 0.5 cubic feet of storage space in the front.
The Tesla 3 has 19.8 cubic feet of cargo space in the trunk and another 3.1 cubic feet in the front trunk. Your passengers have less space with just 35.2 inches of legroom.
Colors
The Hyundai IONIQ 6 is available in six colors: Onyx Black, Transmission Blue, Ultimate Red, Curated Silver, Digital Green, and Serenity White. The SEL and Limited trims also come in Gravity Gold Matte.
The Tesla 3 is available in just five colors. You can choose from Red Multi-Coat, Deep Blue Metallic, Pearl White Multi-Coat, Midnight Silver Metallic, and Solid Black.
Technology
The IONIQ comes standard with a 12.3-inch infotainment screen as well as a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration also come standard.
A 15-inch touch screen dominates the interior of the Tesla 3. Though the screen is impressively sized, it takes over many traditionally physical buttons, which creates a significant learning curve. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not available, making it difficult to integrate this vehicle with your other tech.
